At the recent IoT West Africa Conference, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) sent a clear message: Infrastructure is the engine of Nigeria’s digital future, but policy is the fuel.

Speaking on the high-stakes panel, “The Lagos-Abuja Digital Corridor,” NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa, represented by Dr. Aristotle Onumo, challenged the industry to look beyond hardware. While the world hunts for the next cloud hub, NITDA is focused on the invisible architecture policies that turn potential into prosperity.

Nigeria is not just building infrastructure but is also focused on strategic planning, with Dr. Onumo highlighting several key pillars that are currently reshaping the nation’s technological landscape.

According to him, the Lagos-Abuja Corridor leverages the national broadband policy to prioritize infrastructure deployment in areas where it is most needed. The Sovereign Cloud Project is a bold initiative designed to empower local providers and prevent foreign hyperscale companies from monopolizing the country’s digital backbone. Additionally, the state is driving demand-driven growth by consolidating government servers to act as a primary customer and create a significant market for local data centers.

“Collaboration massifies impact; partnership harnesses collective intelligence. No one can achieve this in isolation,” Onumo remarked, emphasizing that the era of IT in a silo is over.

Also, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), dropped a sobering statistic: Over 90% of Nigeria’s data is currently hosted abroad.

This isn’t just a technicality; it’s a matter of national sovereignty. With the data center market projected to hit $1.9 billion by 2031, Olatunji urged investors to capitalize on the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 to build secure, local, and compliant hubs.

NITDA’s vision isn’t just about servers; it’s about people. Through the Digital Literacy for All initiative, the agency is on a sprint to ensure 70% of Nigerians are digitally literate by 2027.

The strategy is to partner with the NYSC to deploy digital champions across all 774 Local Government Areas and get 30 million Nigerians trained in three years.

The “Lagos-Abuja Digital Corridor” is more than a geographic route; it’s a call to action for the private sector. As Dr. Onumo put it: “If we must achieve our mission, we need you, and you need us.”
