Internet traffic in West Africa is experiencing explosive growth, thanks to a strategic partnership between Equinix, the world’s digital infrastructure leader, and AMS-IX, a leading internet exchange operator.

Since the launch of their collaboration in Lagos a year ago, internet traffic flowing through the Equinix data center has surged by a staggering 200%. This significant increase, from 30Gbps to nearly 100Gbps, underscores the region’s burgeoning demand for high-speed, reliable internet connectivity.

Jiri Prochazka, Head of Network Infrastructure at CDN77, noted that this enables the company to achieve a balanced and efficient network across West Africa.

The partnership’s impact extends beyond Nigeria. While Nigerian traffic initially dominated the exchange, accounting for 85% of the total, regional traffic has now surged to 45%. This shift signifies a more interconnected West Africa, with a dynamic digital ecosystem emerging.

Also, Oluwasayo Oshadami, Director, Solutions Architecture for Equinix Nigeria said: “We’re creating a platform for seamless connectivity. AMS-IX Lagos has transformed connectivity into a competitive advantage, fostering a thriving digital ecosystem.”

The exchange’s ability to connect a diverse range of internet service providers (ISPs), mobile network operators (MNOs), and content providers on a single platform fueled the growth. This centralized approach streamlines traffic flow, reduces latency, and ultimately reduces business costs.

AMS-IX Lagos remains committed to expanding its reach and becoming the premier regional hub. By supporting a wider range of network participants, this partnership will continue to drive digital transformation, making AMS-IX Lagos the preferred platform for CDNs, NSPs, ISPs, and MNOs across West Africa
