FairMoney Microfinance Bank, a technology-driven financial institution, has announced the strategic appointments of Gbenga Shobo as Chairman of the Board and Debo Aderoju as Executive Director and Chief Risk Officer.

These appointments signal a major milestone in FairMoney’s institutional evolution, transitioning from a high-growth fintech to a full-service microfinance bank. The move underscores a deepened commitment to world-class corporate governance, regulatory excellence, and sustainable expansion within Nigeria’s digital financial services sector.

The appointment of Gbenga Shobo as Chairman brings over 35 years of deep-sector experience to FairMoney. A celebrated figure in African banking, Mr. Shobo previously served as the Deputy Managing Director of First Bank of Nigeria Limited.

During his tenure at FirstBank, he was instrumental in driving digital banking volumes and overseeing business units responsible for significant revenue growth. An alumnus of Harvard Business School, Stanford, and INSEAD, he holds over 11 years of board-level experience across the insurance, fintech, and microfinance sectors. He is expected to provide high-level strategic oversight and strengthen the bank’s governance architecture as it scales its operations.

Joining the executive team is Debo Aderoju, a seasoned professional with more than two decades of experience in enterprise risk management, credit management, and inclusive finance.

Mr. Aderoju most recently served as the MD/CEO of Letshego Microfinance Bank Nigeria. His career also includes pivotal roles at United Bank for Africa (UBA) and First Bank of Nigeria, where he managed risk functions across multiple Sub-Saharan African markets. He is an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Gordon Institute of Business and Science (GIBS) at the University of Pretoria. Subject to regulatory approval, he will lead the bank’s efforts in enhancing operational efficiency and robust risk frameworks.

Commenting on the new additions, Henry Obiekea, Managing Director of FairMoney Microfinance Bank, noted that the bank is at a “critical inflection point.”

“Strong corporate governance is essential to sustain the impressive growth we have achieved. Welcoming Gbenga Shobo and Debo Aderoju reinforces our commitment to transforming FairMoney into a market-leading financial institution. Their expertise in managing complex operations and inclusive finance will be invaluable as we deliver greater value and ethical rigor to our customers,” Obiekea stated.
