The Federal Government, through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), has issued a new circular designating Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) as the official provider of ICT infrastructure for all federal government institutions.
This directive reinforces the government’s commitment to leveraging its significant investment in the National Information Communications Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB). This move, in line with the “Nigeria First Policy,” mandates that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) use GBB for IP network services, data center hosting, and other related solutions.
Galaxy Backbone was established to ensure data sovereignty through a centralized e-government platform that offers secure connectivity and ICT services. With this new endorsement, GBB is officially positioned as the government’s central data exchange and the interoperability layer for Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure. Its role is to coordinate, manage, and integrate all federal digital infrastructure, ensuring compliance with national data sovereignty goals.
While the directive ensures compliance, GBB emphasizes that its mission is to build trust and collaboration with MDAs. Federal government institutions currently hosting data abroad are encouraged to migrate to GBB’s secure platforms. This migration promises improved service delivery, enhanced security, and alignment with global best practices.
Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director/CEO of GBB, underscored this commitment: “We have repositioned our organization in such a way that the MDAs experience the quality, reliability, and innovation of our services, and they can see in us a partner in their digital transformation journey.”
He added, “Our pledge is to listen, collaborate, and provide tailored digital infrastructure solutions that meet the unique needs of each agency, while ensuring Nigeria’s data remains safe within our borders.”
