The Federal Government has announced plans to officially launch the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System in October and is being positioned as a foundational pillar for national security, emergency response, and the growing digital economy.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, disclosed this following a collaborative workshop with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and various national security agencies.

According to Dr. Tijani, the upcoming postcode system will assign a unique, machine-readable, and geographically anchored digital address to every single location across Nigeria. While traditionally used for mail delivery, the modern system is designed to fulfill far more critical infrastructure roles.

“Beyond improving mail delivery, it will strengthen emergency response, enhance national security operations, improve address verification, support more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and enable more effective delivery of public services,” Dr. Tijani said.

While emphasizing that building a modern digital ecosystem requires that every citizen, business, and physical location can be accurately identified and connected, the Minister categorized the digital postcode system as one of the top five defining legacy initiatives his ministry has developed over the past three years.

The postcode system will operate alongside several other major infrastructural projects driving the country’s digital transformation agenda. One of these is Project BRIDGE, which is a massive 90,000km nationwide fibre infrastructure programme. Another initiative is NUCAP, a connectivity project aiming to link over 20 million Nigerians via 3,700 new telecommunications towers. Additionally, the Nigeria Data Exchange will serve as a platform designed to streamline secure data sharing across networks. Finally, the government is driving ongoing strategic efforts to expand the AI ecosystem and position Nigeria’s artificial intelligence capabilities among the top five in the world.

To ensure the rollout addresses critical national needs, Dr. Tijani joined the Postmaster General and CEO of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, to host security agency stakeholders. The session focused extensively on how real-time, accurate digital mapping can optimize security coordination and drastically reduce emergency response times.

The Ministry plans to widen its consultations in the buildup to the autumn launch. “We will continue engaging other stakeholder groups over the coming months,” Dr. Tijani added, noting that he anticipates a transformative impact across Nigerian society and the broader economy once the system goes live in October.
