The Federal Government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has commenced the rollout of University Innovation Pods (UniPods), a nationwide initiative aimed at equipping young Nigerians with digital and artificial intelligence skills while turning universities into centres for innovation and enterprise.

Vice President Kashim Shettima is scheduled to officially flag off the programme today, April 7th, at the University of Lagos, where the first artificial intelligence-focused hub will be launched.

The UniPods initiative is expected to train over 500,000 students in advanced digital skills and support between 1,500 and 2,000 startups led by young innovators, as part of broader efforts by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to drive economic transformation through technology.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia, said the programme is designed to address the disconnect between formal education and labour market needs by embedding practical innovation within the university system.

He said the hubs would provide structured environments where students can develop ideas, access mentorship, secure funding, and translate research into viable enterprises.

According to Hadejia, the initiative goes beyond infrastructure, describing it as a deliberate move to build a national innovation system that links talent, research, industry, and investment.

The rollout will begin in Lagos and extend to other universities across the country, with plans to scale the programme to more than 50 institutions. Each hub is expected to focus on sectors aligned with regional strengths, including agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and climate-related industries.

UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, said the initiative positions Nigeria as the first country in Africa to scale the UniPod model through direct public investment, adding that it would strengthen the country’s role as a hub for digital talent and innovation.

She noted that the programme, which will be implemented under the National Innovation and Digital Transformation Partnership Programme in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is expected to drive job creation and enterprise growth.

The launch comes amid ongoing government efforts to boost digital literacy and youth employment, with officials highlighting Nigeria’s youthful population as a key driver of its ambition to build a knowledge-based economy.

With the first phase set to begin this week, authorities say the UniPods will serve as a platform for transforming universities from traditional academic institutions into engines of innovation and economic development.
