The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced a major collaboration with the Ministry of Interior to improve emergency response in Nigeria. During a meeting with Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, his counterpart from the Ministry of Interior, the two Ministers explored ways to leverage technology for better service delivery.
A key outcome of the meeting is the adoption of the 112 emergency numbers by all relevant agencies. This initiative, facilitated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), will bring services from the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corp, and the Federal Fire Service under one roof.
Highlighting the significance of the agreement via his X handle, Tijani said: “The Ministry of Interior will now play an active role in aligning all stakeholders. Together, our ministries will harmonize all existing emergency numbers under the 112 number. This will transform it into a more efficient platform for managing emergency communications in Nigeria.”
The 112 number is a universal emergency number used in many countries. By adopting this system, Nigerians will have a single point of contact for various emergencies, simplifying the response process and potentially saving lives. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved public service delivery.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Ministry of Interior demonstrates a positive step towards a more efficient and coordinated emergency response system in Nigeria.
