The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has announced the appointment of Vivek Badrinath as its new Director General. Badrinath, a seasoned telecom executive with a distinguished career at Vodafone Group, will succeed Mats Granryd, who has led the GSMA for nine years.

Badrinath brings a wealth of experience to the role, having most recently served as CEO of Vodafone Vantage Towers. Before that, he held senior positions at Vodafone, Nokia, and Orange, demonstrating his deep understanding of the telecom industry and its evolving landscape.

In his new role, Badrinath will drive the GSMA’s strategic direction and ensure its continued success in representing the interests of mobile operators worldwide. He is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the mobile ecosystem and fostering innovation across the industry.

“We are delighted to welcome Vivek Badrinath as our new Director General. His extensive experience and proven leadership skills make him the ideal candidate to guide the GSMA into its next chapter,” said Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete, Chairman of Telefonica and the GSMA.

Badrinath expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “I am honored to have been selected to lead the GSMA. I look forward to working with the board, members, and leadership team to amplify the positive impact of the mobile ecosystem on people, industry, and society globally.”

Badrinath will officially assume the role of Director General on April 1, 2025, following a transition period during which he will work closely with Granryd to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.
