Application-to-person (A2P) messaging has become an indispensable part of the modern telecommunications landscape, as it allows businesses to communicate directly with consumers via text messages.
It can also facilitate a wide range of interactions from crucial bank alerts and healthcare reminders to marketing campaigns and government updates.
In a welcome address at a Virtual Stakeholders’ Forum on the Draft A2P Licensing Framework recently, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), noted that A2P messaging has become a vital technology in driving efficiency, enhancing communication, and supporting socioeconomic development.
“A2P has become the go-to platform for businesses to send notifications, whether transactional, promotional, or service-related, directly to consumers,” Dr. Maida emphasized in the address delivered by the Ag. Head, Legal & Regulatory Services of NCC, Mrs. Chizua Whyte.
While A2P messaging offers numerous benefits, it also presents significant challenges. Concerns such as fraud, spam, data privacy violations, and an uneven distribution of value within the ecosystem have plagued the industry.
Recognizing the need for a robust regulatory framework, the NCC convened the forum to present a draft A2P Licensing Framework to stakeholders. Dr. Maida highlighted the importance of inclusive and collaborative efforts in shaping the future of A2P messaging in Nigeria. “We want to hear from you—your perspectives, experiences, and recommendations—so that together, we can refine this framework to ensure it meets the needs of all of us,” he stated.
The NCC’s goal is to create a sustainable and thriving A2P messaging ecosystem that protects consumers, fosters fair competition, and unlocks new opportunities for growth and innovation. By addressing the existing challenges and establishing a clear regulatory framework, Nigeria can harness the full potential of A2P messaging to drive economic growth and improve the lives of its citizens.
