    How AI will reshape cybersecurity in 2026: Kaspersky’s vision

    As we move through 2026, the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence has fundamentally shifted the digital arms race. Experts at Kaspersky have identified a dual reality. While Large Language Models (LLMs) are empowering defenders with unprecedented speed, they are simultaneously providing threat actors with a more sophisticated toolkit than ever before.

    Here are the key predictions for the cybersecurity landscape this year.

    1. The Democratization of Deepfakes

    Deepfakes have transitioned from a niche technical novelty to a mainstream security concern.

    • Mainstream Awareness: Organizations are now integrating synthetic content risks into standard employee training.
    • The Audio Frontier: While visual quality has plateaued at a high level, 2026 is the year of realistic audio. Sophisticated voice cloning is now the primary growth area for fraud.
    • Lower Barrier to Entry: Creating mid-quality deepfakes no longer requires expert skills; “one-click” tools have made these capabilities accessible to a much broader—and more dangerous—audience.

    2. The Rise of Real-Time Manipulation

    While still requiring technical proficiency, real-time face and voice swapping is becoming a potent weapon for targeted attacks. By using virtual cameras and AI manipulation during live calls, cybercriminals are conducting highly convincing social engineering attacks that bypass traditional visual “gut checks.”

    3. The “Open-Weight” Challenge

    A significant shift is occurring as open-weight models (open-source AI) catch up to proprietary closed models.

    • Lack of Safeguards: Unlike closed models with strict safety filters, open-source systems lack comparable restrictions.
    • Blurring Lines: The gap between what a “safe” commercial AI and an “unrestricted” open model can do is disappearing, giving attackers powerful, unregulated engines for malicious code and infrastructure.

    4. AI Across the “Kill Chain”

    AI is no longer just used for a single phase of a hack; it is now a cross-chain tool. Threat actors are utilizing LLMs for:

    • Automated infrastructure building.
    • Writing and debugging malicious code.
    • Probing for vulnerabilities in real-time.
    • Concealing AI signatures to make attacks harder for forensic teams to analyze.

    5. The Vanishing Line of Authenticity

    As major brands adopt AI for legitimate advertising, synthetic imagery is becoming “visually normal.” This makes it increasingly difficult for users to distinguish a polished corporate email from a high-quality phishing page. When fake content looks as professional as the real thing, traditional “look for the typo” advice becomes obsolete.

    The Silver Lining: The AI-Powered Defender

    Despite these threats, AI is revolutionizing the Security Operations Center (SOC). Vladislav Tushkanov, Research Development Group Manager at Kaspersky, highlights a shift toward “Agent-based systems.”

    “Specialists will shift from manually searching for data to making decisions based on already-prepared context. Security tools are transitioning to natural-language interfaces, enabling prompts instead of complex technical queries.”

    Key Defensive Advancements:

    • Continuous Scanning: AI agents hunt for vulnerabilities 24/7 without fatigue.
    • Contextual Investigation: AI gathers all relevant data for a breach before a human even opens the ticket.
    • Natural Language Queries: Analysts can now talk to their security software, asking “Show me all suspicious logins from the last hour” instead of writing complex code.
