A new industry report has identified a sophisticated shift in the digital threat landscape across West Africa, revealing that identity farming and account takeovers, frequently aided by insiders, are now the primary drivers of regional fraud.
The findings were published in the 2026 Digital Identity Fraud Report titled “From Selfies to Signals: Identity Enters the Security Era,” released by Smile ID. The report, which analyzed over 200 million identity checks from 2025, warns that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has radically lowered the cost of fraud while increasing the scale of high-quality deepfake attacks.
Fraudsters in West Africa are increasingly bypassing traditional security measures through sheer volume and systemic manipulation. According to the report, 65% of fraud attempts in the region are driven by spoofing and “no-face-match” errors during biometric verification. Additionally, 22% of these attempts involve significant reuse and large-scale automation, which highlights the rise of organized criminal networks. Finally, 13% of fraud is attributed to document integrity and presentment manipulation, including tactics such as screen tampering and portrait anomalies.
The report signals a major pivot in global fraud tactics. Authentication-related fraud attempts now exceed onboarding (KYC) fraud by more than five times. This suggests that attackers are no longer just trying to create fake accounts; they are targeting verified accounts through login flows, account recovery, and high-value transactions.
In 2025 alone, Smile ID recorded over 100,000 “injection-style” attacks per month. These sophisticated attempts use emulators and virtual cameras to bypass the physical camera entirely, injecting synthetic or pre-recorded media into the verification pipeline.

Mark Straub, CEO of Smile ID, emphasized that the industry has moved beyond simple identity checks.
“Fraud is no longer a ‘KYC’ problem; it is a continuous cybersecurity challenge. AI enables fraudsters to operate at an unprecedented scale. Effective defence now requires network intelligence and ecosystem-wide protection to safeguard the individual,” Straub stated.
By utilizing internally tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) and privacy-preserving metadata, the report suggests that network defence is the only way to identify coordinated abuse patterns that appear legitimate when viewed in isolation.
