National Library’s virtual platform fails to deliver on unlimited access promises

Users of the National Library of Nigeria’s virtual library platform are reporting registration failures, missing features, and limited access to content, after the agency promoted the service as offering “unlimited” downloads of e-books and journals.

The National Library made the claim in a post on X on April 27, directing users to its Virtual Library Platform. However, multiple users responding to the post said they were unable to complete registration due to missing email verification links. In contrast, others reported inaccessible pages and difficulty locating downloadable materials and the download button.

An independent check by this reporter confirms some of the issues. After registering on the platform, no verification email was received more than an hour later, preventing account activation and access to the service.

Further testing shows that while the website successfully redirects users from an unsecured HTTP link to a secure HTTPS version (and its SSL certificate is valid), key usability challenges remain. There is no visible download button on available listings, with users instead presented with an “add to my collection” option without clear instructions on how to access materials.

Guidance shared by Faizah Aminu on X, which directed users to browse open-access resources through the platform’s “Collections” section, led to an external web page that displayed nothing.

Several users also questioned the availability and quality of content on the platform, citing empty sections, incorrect book descriptions, and the absence of key subject areas such as engineering.

The National Library has not issued a public response addressing the complaints as of the time of publishing this report.

The issues highlight broader challenges facing public digital platforms in Nigeria, where service announcements often outpace functionality. Virtual libraries are designed to provide seamless access to digital materials, but barriers at the registration and discovery stages can significantly limit usability.

The National Library’s virtual platform is intended to expand access to knowledge in a country where physical libraries are not always easily accessible. However, early user experiences suggest the system may still be struggling to meet that goal.
