NCC licenses seven new ISPs to boost competition

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially licensed seven new Internet Service Providers (ISPs), signaling a fresh wave of competition in a market hungry for reliable connectivity.

The new licensees, including Dasol Solutions and the highly anticipated Amazon Kuiper Nigeria, received five-year operational mandates effective from January 1, 2026. This regulatory push brings the total number of authorized ISPs in Nigeria to 231, up from 224 just a month prior.

The new providers Amazon Kuiper Nigeria Limited (Lagos), Boost ISP Limited (Lagos), Dasol Solutions Services Limited (Lagos), Fibre Sonic Limited (Lagos), Intellivision Technologies Limited (Lagos), Wetom Technologies Limited (Abuja) and Granet Technologies Limited (Imo).

While the number of ISPs is growing, the new players face an uphill battle against established giants. The market is currently dominated by a “Big Three” trio Spectranet, Starlink, and FibreOne, who together controlled 65% of the 313,713 active ISP subscribers as of mid-2025.

Current ISP market leaders with active subscribers include Spectranet: 99,520, Starlink: 66,523, FibreOne: 37,117, ipNX: 15,636 and Tizeti: 13,996

Despite these numbers, the entire ISP sector remains a niche compared to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). Industry data from November 2025 shows that MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile still command a staggering 99.5% of the country’s 144.7 million internet users.

The influx of new providers comes at a critical time. In November 2025 alone, Nigerians consumed a record 1.236 million terabytes of data. As the digital economy expands, the demand for “fixed” and satellite-based internet—often more stable than mobile data for business use—is surging.

The NCC’s decision to license global satellite players like Amazon’s Project Kuiper, BeetleSat-1, and Satelio IoT Services suggests a strategic move to bridge the connectivity gap in areas where traditional fiber optic cables struggle to reach.

“The rise in competition signals a positive trend,” the NCC data suggests. “It comes at a time when Nigerians yearn for quality network and internet experience, a service critical for daily financial operations.”

With more choices on the table, the hope is that increased competition will finally drive down costs and force a significant jump in service quality for the average consumer.
