The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has released draft regulatory guidelines for the use of the lower 6 GHz band (5925 – 6425 MHz), marking a pivotal shift in the country’s strategy to provide high-capacity, high-speed internet.
The regulatory guidelines uploaded on the NCC official website indicated that the move is designed to accommodate the next generation of wireless technology, specifically Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, addressing the growing congestion on traditional 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
It noted that as digital consumption in Nigeria skyrockets, existing Wi-Fi bands have become overcrowded, leading to slower speeds and higher latency. The 6GHz spectrum offers a wider highway for data that enables gigabit speeds to support high-bandwidth applications like 4K/8K streaming and cloud gaming. This spectrum also provides ultra-low latency, which is essential for real-time applications, virtual reality (VR), and telemedicine. Furthermore, it offers increased capacity by allowing more devices to connect simultaneously without performance degradation.
The NCC’s framework outlines strict technical and regulatory conditions to ensure that new Wi-Fi services do not interfere with existing “Fixed Services,” which currently use the 6GHz band for point-to-point links. The band will be available on a license-exempt basis, meaning users do not pay spectrum fees, although they must obtain an Operational License-Exemption Certificate before deployment.
The framework establishes two specific device categories: Low Power Indoor (LPI) devices, which are restricted to indoor environments like homes and offices, and Very Low Power (VLP) devices, which are permitted for both indoor and outdoor use but prohibited for fixed outdoor installations or drones. To prevent signal chaos, all equipment must undergo strict Type-Approval by the NCC before importation or sale, and any unauthorized alteration to these devices will face legal sanctions. Furthermore, interference management is handled on a non-interference basis, requiring any Wi-Fi device to be shut down immediately if it causes harm to existing licensed fixed links.
NCC views the 6GHz spectrum as a critical partner to the nation’s 5G rollout. While 5G provides the external mobile backbone, 6GHz Wi-Fi ensures that those high speeds are maintained when users enter their homes or offices, effectively eliminating the bottleneck often found in indoor wireless environments.
While global bodies like the IEEE have commended the NCC’s move, some stakeholders are pushing for Nigeria to go even further. Current drafts only cover the lower 500 MHz of the band. Tech advocates argue that opening the entire 1200 MHz (up to 7125 MHz) would provide the scale needed for true Wi-Fi 7 performance and future-proof Nigeria’s digital economy.
The NCC is currently in a consultative phase, inviting stakeholders to review the technical specifications—including emission limits and channel arrangements before the guidelines are formally gazetted.
For the average Nigerian, this regulation is the missing link for high-speed fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services. Currently, many Nigerians pay for expensive 100Mbps+ fiber connections only to have the speed “throttled” by old Wi-Fi routers that can’t handle the load.
By opening the 6GHz band, the NCC is ensuring that the hardware in our pockets and on our desks can finally keep up with the speed of the modern internet.
