NCC pledges superior network experience and tariff transparency for telecom consumers in 2026

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared 2026 as a pivotal year for the Nigerian telecom consumer, promising a significant shift toward better service quality, transparent billing and enhanced digital protection.

In a New Year message titled “2026: Delivering Better Quality of Experience to the Nigerian Consumer,” the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, outlined a consumer-centric roadmap aimed at making telecommunications services more reliable and fairer.

According to the message posted on the Commission’s official website, the primary focus for 2026 is to ensure that Nigerians feel the impact of recent infrastructure investments in their daily lives.

Key expectations for consumers this year include improved voice clarity and more consistent data speeds for enhanced performance. The NCC also aims for greater reliability through a reduction in avoidable service disruptions and faster restoration times when outages occur. Furthermore, the Commission plans to ensure financial fairness by introducing simpler and more transparent tariff structures and bundles. Finally, there is a commitment to automatic redress through prompt value reversal for unsuccessful airtime or data recharges.

“Our shared expectation is simple: better services that people can feel, delivered by a market that is fair, competitive, and sustainable,” Dr. Maida stated, noting that these goals align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition to build a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030.

To achieve these goals, the NCC plans to intensify its monitoring of black spots and high-traffic areas where service drops are frequent. The Commission also intends to strictly enforce market discipline by operationalizing a revised Corporate Governance Code, holding operators accountable for their service delivery and billing accuracy.

To protect users from the darker side of the digital world, the NCC is strengthening the Internet Code of Practice to safeguard Nigerians against fraud, cyberbullying, and harmful online content.

A closer check on the message indicates that the 2026 agenda is backed by significant growth recorded in the previous year. By the end of 2025, Nigeria’s broadband penetration reached 50.58%, with over 109.6 million subscriptions. Furthermore, 4G technology finally overtook 2G as the dominant connection type, now accounting for 52% of the market.

Meanwhile, to sustain this growth, the NCC is pushing “Project BRIDGE,” a massive infrastructure initiative aimed at deploying 90,000km of fiber-optic cables nationwide.

Also, the Commission sent a clear message to telecommunications providers, urging them to invest deliberately in network resilience. “Operators are now expected to communicate more transparently during downtime, provide realistic restoration timelines, and treat customer complaints as critical feedback rather than mere administrative tasks,” it noted.

To ensure these improvements aren’t hindered by external factors, the NCC confirmed it is working closely with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to resolve Right-of-Way challenges and collaborating with security agencies like the NSCDC to protect cell towers from vandalism.

As the year unfolds, the NCC maintains that its priority remains clear: ensuring that every Nigerian can use the internet with confidence and receive maximum value for every kobo spent on telecommunications.
