The Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Efosa Idehen has highlighted some of the measures the Commission has taken to engage telecom service providers with regards to unlimited data bundles.

In a short video posted on the Commission’s official social media platforms, Mr. Idehen noted that NCC has continued to engage service providers to ensure that unlimited data bundles are not capped.

This engagement, according to him is coming owing to the complaints by some telecom consumers that the service providers do cap the unlimited data bundle to 6gigabytes per day, even when such information was given at the point of purchasing the data.

“These are the issues we are looking at. It came to the fore that some people bought unlimited data and midway to the subscription, the goalpost shifted and the service provider started capping their data usage to 6 gigabytes per day. It supposed to be unlimited,” he said.

He noted that NCC has held several meetings with all the customer executives of all the telecom service providers to ask what the real issues are and to tell them they cannot shift the goalpost midway, stressing that If there is a need to change the goalpost, let the subscribed data run to its fullest and subsequently, the customers can be informed that the unlimited data comes with a cap.

“We have also heard consumer parliament frequently where these issues featured prominently. One issue we wanted to clear is whether the consumer actually used what they bought and not that someone is deliberately depleting their data,” the NCC Director added.

He explained that normally, an unlimited data subscription is fair usage, but if you didn’t tell your customers that your unlimited data comes with fair usage, then you have to stick to the plan you sold to your customers.
