The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) is planning to generate N8 billion over the next three years by partnering with private companies. This strategic move is aimed at tackling the fact that 93% of the company’s broadband capacity is currently unused.

Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, the managing director of NIGCOMSAT, announced during a stakeholder roundtable in Lagos.

She explained that while broadband services are the most profitable product line for the agency, they remain largely untapped, with only seven percent utilization. This is despite the broad potential for the service in sectors such as education, healthcare, defense, and finance.

“We know broadband has greater value and wider use cases. The challenge is that we cannot do it alone,” Egerton-Idehen stated.

She emphasized that the company’s future growth depends on expanding its broadband services through collaboration.

To showcase its capabilities, Egerton-Idehen highlighted the agency’s successful Project 774 initiative, which connected 45 local government secretariats in eight states within two months. This achievement, she noted, was a feat that terrestrial fiber operators couldn’t match. She also mentioned ongoing projects to provide connectivity to naval ships and remote communities.
