In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s technological infrastructure and security, the Federal Government has officially entered into a partnership with the Republic of Finland. The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating growth across several critical pillars of the digital economy.

The agreement follows a recent partnership and investment tour of Europe led by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. To finalize the deal, the Minister hosted a high-level Finnish delegation in Abuja, comprising H.E. Jarno Syrjälä, Under Secretary of State for International Trade at Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Sanna Selin, Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria.

The engagement marks a transition from high-level discussions to actionable cooperation between the two nations, leveraging Finland’s reputation as a global leader in telecommunications and digital security.

The newly signed MoU is comprehensive, targeting several key areas essential for a modern, secure state. It focuses on strengthening defenses against digital threats and exploring the potential of AI and advanced computing through cybersecurity and emerging technologies.

The agreement also aims to streamline citizen services by implementing an efficient Digital Public Infrastructure for digital government. Additionally, it aims to expand network reach and foster a more vibrant ecosystem for tech startups and private sector players by enhancing connectivity and driving innovation.

According to Dr. Tijani, the agreement solidifies ongoing conversations with Finnish development agencies and private sector companies, adding that the partnership is designed to advance initiatives that drive inclusive growth, ensuring that both Nigeria and Finland can leverage digital transformation for mutual economic benefit.

“Through this partnership, we will advance initiatives that drive inclusive growth, ensuring that both Nigeria and Finland harness the full potential of digital transformation for shared prosperity,” Dr. Tijani stated via a post on LinkedIn.

By aligning with Finland, a country known for its innovation in GovTech, Nigeria aims to fast-track its journey toward a more secure and digitally integrated society.
