Nigeria leads West African shift to conversational AI as Infobip reports 98% omnichannel adoption

Global cloud communications leader Infobip has released its Messaging Trends Report 2026, revealing a near-total collapse of single-channel business communication. Analyzing 628 billion interactions from 2025, the report highlights that 98% of platform traffic now spans multiple channels, up from just 27% a decade ago.

The report underscores a dramatic shift in the West African landscape, where businesses are rapidly moving beyond SMS to conversational platforms. Nigeria remains the region’s primary driver for digital growth, particularly through the adoption of WhatsApp and AI-integrated tools.

    Regional Growth Highlights:

    • WhatsApp Usage: Increased by 23% in Nigeria as the primary channel for business-to-consumer engagement.
    • Email Growth: Surged by 70% across the continent.
    • Sector Leaders: The Energy, Utilities & Waste sector saw a 104% increase in messaging volume, while Production & Manufacturing grew fivefold (5×).

Key Trends: From Chatbots to Agentic AI

Infobip’s data includes a historical review of 3.8 trillion messages over 20 years and identifies three pillars defining the current era. The first pillar is the rise of Agentic AI, where communication moves beyond simple automated replies to autonomous, goal-driven journeys that resolve complex issues without human intervention. The second pillar marks the death of the single channel, noting that single-channel traffic plummeted from 73% in 2015 to just 2.3% by 2025. This shift reflects modern consumer expectations for a seamless experience across WhatsApp, Email, and Voice. The third pillar focuses on scalable platforms over isolated apps, with Africa Sales Director Filip Filkovic noting that brands now prioritize customer experience platforms like AgentOS. This approach allows businesses to create value in the moment rather than simply sending isolated alerts.

Responding, Ante Pamukovic, Chief Revenue Officer at Infobip: “The future is omnichannel, conversational, and increasingly powered by Agentic AI. We provide the infrastructure enabling businesses to meet their customers on the right channel, at the right time.”

Also, Filip Filkovic, Africa Sales Director at Infobip: “In Africa, the big shift is that brands are no longer thinking in terms of isolated channels… It matters far more whether an interaction resolves an issue and creates value.”

As Infobip celebrates its 20th anniversary, the 2026 report serves as a roadmap for the next evolution of autonomous, AI-driven customer experiences.
