Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in global governance, winning two prestigious international awards for its strategic use of technology to enhance transparency and citizen participation. This recognition firmly positions Nigeria as a leader in digital governance on both the African continent and worldwide.

The honors were announced at the recently concluded 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit in Spain, recognizing the collaborative efforts of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the civil society organization Dataphyte.

Nigeria’s submissions stood out among 160 commitments from 42 participating countries, earning the nation dual recognition:

    1. Thematic Award (Overall Global Winner in Digital Governance): This historic win recognizes Nigeria as the global best performer for demonstrating ground-breaking policies and technology platforms designed to make governance more participatory and technology-driven.
    2. Regional Award (Africa and the Middle East): This accolade affirms Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to advancing Open Digital Governance across the region.

    A Testament to Collaborative Governance

These awards are a direct testament to the effectiveness of the collaborative approach between the Nigerian government and civil society. Under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, NITDA has championed a digital transformation framework anchored on transparency, accessibility, and inclusiveness.

Through initiatives focused on openness, innovation, and data-driven policymaking, Nigeria is demonstrating a clear roadmap for how digital transformation can effectively enhance accountability and public trust.

With this global validation, Nigeria has not only solidified its position as a continental leader but also as an influential voice in shaping the future of open and digital governance worldwide. The awards serve as strong motivation for continued efforts to deepen citizen engagement and strengthen accountability through innovative technological solutions.
