A Nigerian innovator, James Emmanuel Ikenna, has taken a significant step towards addressing the country’s persistent power crisis.

His groundbreaking Hydro Electric Core Generator has been crowned the winner of the Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge 2024.

Ikenna’s innovative solution stands out for its scalability and affordability. Unlike traditional hydroelectric power plants, which require large dams and extensive infrastructure, the Hydro Electric Core Generator is designed for smaller-scale deployment.

It operates using a water recycling system, eliminating the need for fuel and reducing operational costs.

This innovative technology is particularly promising for rural areas where access to electricity is limited. The 3kVA model, estimated to cost around N200,000 to build, can provide a reliable and affordable power source for households and communities.

The Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge, a joint initiative by Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) and Jacob’s Ladder Africa, aims to foster clean energy solutions in Nigeria.

By providing a platform for young innovators, the challenge seeks to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs to address the country’s energy challenges.

Ikenna’s victory marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. With the support of government, private sector, and funding organizations, his innovative solution has the potential to transform the lives of millions of Nigerians.
