As a new academic year begins, Google Search trends reveal a major shift in how Nigerian students are tackling their studies: a widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Searches for “AI + studying” have skyrocketed by over 200% in the past year, indicating that AI tools are quickly becoming a primary resource for learning.

This surge is part of a broader trend, with overall AI-related searches in Nigeria reaching an all-time high in 2025, growing by 60% over the last 12 months. This data shows that Nigerians are not just curious about what AI is, but are actively looking for ways to use it to improve their daily lives, particularly in education.

Students are applying AI to a wide variety of subjects, with remarkable gains in specific disciplines. Searches combining “AI” with academic subjects have seen significant increases in Chemistry +50%, Maths +30%, Languages +30% and Grammar +20%.

These search queries reveal a focus on practical application. For mathematics, top searches include “what is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems” and “how to use AI to solve math problems.” Similarly, students are looking for “AI tutor for students” and “free AI tools for studying,” showing a clear demand for accessible, specialized educational tools.

The interest in AI extends beyond academic help. There is a growing curiosity about the technology itself, with questions like “how to use ai” and “what is the full meaning of AI both rising by 80% over the past year.

As students integrate AI into their work, they are also becoming more aware of related ethical issues. Searches for “AI detection” have seen a massive 290% increase, suggesting a rising awareness of academic integrity and the responsible use of these tools.

Looking ahead, Generative AI was a breakout search term, often paired with “professional certification.” This indicates that students are not just using AI to succeed in their current studies but are also preparing for future careers by building skills that will be essential in the modern workforce.

According to Olumide Balogun, West Africa Director at Google, this trend is a positive sign for the future. “It’s inspiring to see Nigerian students so eagerly embrace AI to support their learning journeys. The data shows that students are not just using AI for answers, but as a tool to deepen their understanding of complex subjects… This curiosity is key to fostering a new generation of innovators,” he said.
