In a move specifically focused on equipping students with the digital skills they need to thrive in the 21st century, Nigeria is taking a big step towards a more digital future by revamping its school curriculum.
The call for change came from Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), who spoke on the urgent need to update the current curriculum to include digital skills at all levels of education.
He believes this call aligns with President Tinubu’s plan to create jobs through technology and boost digital literacy to 70% by 2027.
Inuwa emphasizes the changing landscape of technology. The way we do things is different now, and Nigeria’s schools need to reflect that. He proposes a new “competency-based” curriculum focused on practical skills. This will ensure graduates have what it takes to fill jobs in Nigeria’s growing digital economy and attract foreign investment.
The government sees digital skills as key to national development and economic growth. They believe it will support broader goals like sustainable development and fostering a creative digital economy.
The head of Nigeria’s educational research agency (NERDC) agrees. Professor Janaidu Ismail says digital literacy is crucial for any developing nation. His agency is responsible for curriculum development and is on board with incorporating digital skills.
NERDC also works on educational materials, research to inform policy, and promoting Nigerian languages. Professor Ismail commends NITDA’s efforts in bringing technology to all corners of Nigeria and driving growth in the ICT sector.
This collaboration between NITDA and NERDC paves the way for a more digitally literate Nigerian youth, better equipped to compete in the modern world.
