The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has forged a strategic partnership with global cybersecurity giant Kaspersky to strengthen Nigeria’s digital defenses. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on the sidelines of GTIEX Nigeria in Lagos, is a key step in safeguarding the nation’s digital infrastructure and aligns with the NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0).
According to Kashifu Inuwa, NITDA’s Director General, the human element is the most critical part of cybersecurity. “More than 95% of cyber breaches are caused by human error. Our first line of defense must be the people. We need to build talent, raise awareness, and ensure fluency in how technology is used. This MoU is not just a formality, it is a springboard for action,” he stated.
The partnership’s scope is comprehensive, including cybersecurity training and capacity building, public awareness campaigns, information sharing and threat intelligence and protection of critical national infrastructure
The MoU also outlines a framework for the exchange of technical information and threat data to counter cyberattacks targeting citizens, businesses, and government entities. Kaspersky will provide expert advice to help NITDA build robust cybersecurity frameworks and standards for Nigeria’s most critical information systems.
Chris Norton, General Manager of Kaspersky Africa, expressed strong confidence in the partnership and Nigeria’s digital potential. “We are doubling down on the Nigerian market. Africa doesn’t need charity; it needs skills. Through public-private partnerships like this, we can accelerate value creation for communities and governments,” he said.
The agreement builds on previous engagements and signifies a shared commitment to immediate implementation. Both organizations aim to focus on proactive measures to build a more resilient digital infrastructure, enhancing national security and fostering a secure environment for digital innovation in the country.
