The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a stern warning to Nigerian users about a new cyber threat linked to the popular music streaming platform, Spotify.

Cybercriminals are leveraging Spotify to promote malicious activities, including game hacks, spam links, pirated software, and malware. These individuals are embedding harmful links in playlist names and podcast descriptions, redirecting unsuspecting users to malicious websites.

To protect themselves, NITDA advises users to exercise caution with unverified playlists and podcasts, avoid clicking on suspicious links, keep the Spotify app updated, be wary of websites claiming to offer ChatGPT access and adhere to general cybersecurity best practices.

The agency emphasized the potential risks associated with these cyberattacks, including identity theft, financial loss, and device compromise. NITDA’s warning comes amidst a surge in cybercrime activities in Nigeria. According to a recent report by the Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC), Nigerian banks lost over N53 billion to cybercriminals in the first nine months of 2024.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is crucial for individuals and organizations to stay informed and adopt robust cybersecurity measures.
