The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has assured that the availability of broadband insufficiency was non-negotiable and irreducible in the nation’s strategy towards delivering pervasive telecom services.
The NCC boss, who was speaking during an in-house interview at the Commission’s Head Office in Abuja recently, also reiterated that Federal Government’s focus on providing ubiquitous, accessible and affordable broadband services in Nigeria cannot be questioned.
”The fact is ubiquitous broadband connectivity is key in Nigeria’s pursuit for a wholly digital economy. Hence, the ambitious move by the government to have broadband sufficiency across the country,” he said.
The EVC however stated that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is irrevocably committed to the implementation of various regulatory initiatives and programmes, in collaboration with all stakeholders in the telecom ecosystem.
Implementing these initiatives, according to him will bridge identified gaps and shortages in critical telecom infrastructure in the country, which is central to telecom service provisioning in the country.
Some of the initiatives are the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP) 2020-2025, an initiative of the Federal Government, being driven by NCC and conceived to address infrastructure gaps in the telecom and ICT sector and the licensing of Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos) to speedily take fiber to the hinterland, in order to enhance robust telecom service provision.
