Two instructors from Warri’s Rolof Computer Academy distinguished themselves in a recent Artificial Intelligence (AI) training program.

The 13-week program, designed to equip educators with AI skills for teaching, research, and community engagement, was a collaborative effort between the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), and the West Africa Office of the Association of African Universities (AAU). It attracted over 900 participants from Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Mr. Lucky Ofuafor, founder of Rolof Computer Academy and a member of the Nigeria Association of Artificial Intelligence Practitioners (NAIP), was among the top performers, earning a distinction plus a certificate. He wasn’t alone – another Rolof instructor, Miss Blossom Oyem also achieved the same distinction plus.

The program covered core AI concepts and offered 11 hands-on practical sessions. Participants learned about machine learning, explored AI tools for quality assurance and accreditation, and even delved into the ethical considerations of AI use.

“This training arrived at a perfect moment, ” said Mr. Ofuafor. “The program provided a strong foundation in AI and valuable practical skills. Equipping educators with AI expertise is crucial as this technology transforms every aspect of our lives. At Rolof Computer Academy, we are committed to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in education.”

Prof. Emeritus Peter Okebukola, Director/Facilitator-General of the Virtual Institute for Capacity Building in Higher Education (VICBHE), expressed satisfaction with the program’s outcome. He highlighted the quality of the participants’ end-of-course projects, which focused on developing AI policies for their institutions.

“These exceptional projects will serve as building blocks for crafting AI policies for higher education institutions across participating countries,” Prof. Okebukola said. “The AAU West Africa Office will lead this effort, aiming to develop a regional policy framework for consideration by the AAU Secretary General, Professor Olusola Oyewole.

The program concluded with a session on deepfake technology, ensuring all participants gained proficiency in creating manipulated videos and images.
