Samsung and Apple: Smartphone shipment gap shrinks to record low

For nearly 15 years, Samsung and Apple have battled for the title of top smartphone seller. Though, both companies boast high-quality devices and billions of users, Samsung historically held the lead. However, a recent trend shows the gap between their shipments narrowing significantly.

Data from AltIndex.com reveals that in the first nine months of 2024, Samsung shipped 171.8 million smartphones, 20 million more than Apple. This marks the smallest shipment gap ever recorded between the two tech giants.

    Shrinking Gap, Shifting Strategies

This shrinking gap reflects changes in both companies’ strategies. Samsung has shifted focus from budget models, which once fueled high sales volume, to premium offerings like the Z series and Galaxy S. Meanwhile, Chinese competitors like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have carved out a strong presence in regions where Samsung once dominated with affordable devices.

Apple, on the other hand, benefits from a loyal user base thanks to its tightly integrated ecosystem, strong brand recognition, longer upgrade cycles, and consistent software support. Additionally, Apple’s expansion into markets like India, aided by local manufacturing, has boosted sales. As a result, both companies are increasingly prioritizing quality over quantity, competing for high-value customers.

A Look Back: A Widening Gap Now Closing

The current 20 million shipment gap is a fraction of what it used to be. In 2019, the difference was five times larger, at a staggering 108.8 million units. This trend continues looking further back, with the gap ranging from 95 million to 105 million between 2015 and 2019, and a massive 125 million in 2014.

Samsung Still Leads in Total Sales (for Now)

Despite the recent decline in shipments, Samsung maintains a significant lead in total sales over the past decade. Between 2014 and 2024 (Q3), Samsung has shipped over 3 billion smartphones, a staggering 700 million more than Apple.

However, with the gap continuously shrinking and Apple’s growth trajectory, the future of smartphone dominance remains to be seen.
