Six essential cyber hygiene practices for Cybersecurity Awareness Month

In an era where our lives are increasingly digital—from the phones in our pockets to the computers on our desks—our connection to the internet has never been stronger. Unfortunately, this growing connectivity brings a heightened risk of cyber threats, scams, and hackers preying on a single, careless mistake.

To address this, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is using Cybersecurity Awareness Month to stress a fundamental truth: cyber safety starts with you. Every individual has the power to protect themselves and their wider community by adopting simple yet powerful cyber hygiene practices.

NITDA urges all citizens to incorporate these six essential steps into their daily digital lives:

    1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Ensure every online account is protected with a different, complex password.
    2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts beyond just a password.
    3. Keep Devices and Apps Updated: Regularly install software updates to patch security vulnerabilities.
    4. Back Up Important Data: Frequently save copies of your crucial files to prevent data loss from a breach or system failure.
    5. Avoid Suspicious Links and Attachments: Be wary of communications from unknown sources and never click on unverified links or download unexpected files.
    6. Think Before You Share: Carefully consider the risks before entering or sending personal or financial information online.

This year’s theme, “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,” underscores that digital protection is both a personal duty and a collective effort. By securing your own corner of the internet, you safeguard your family, your workplace, and the entire digital community.

As we continue to build a secure and digitally resilient Nigeria, NITDA calls on everyone to stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online.
