The urgent need for Nigeria to think outside the box and drive global relevance through scientific innovation will take center stage at the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) Innovative & Scientific Conference, scheduled to hold on Thursday, July 23, 2026, in Ikeja, Lagos.

Under the theme, “Bridging Nigeria’s Digital Divide With Scientific Innovation,” the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will lead industry delegates to discuss and make critical decisions aimed at shaping the nation’s technological landscape.

Key industry heavyweights have already signaled their partnership with NITRA for the event. These include mobile brand Tecno; Africa’s premier end-to-end AI solutions company, Hyperspace; and global telecommunications data infrastructure giant, Digital Realty.

Speaking on the upcoming forum, NITRA Chairman Chike Onwuegbuchi explained that the conference aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice.

“The event will seek to create a platform for government and private organizations to deliberate on policies around scientific innovations in Nigeria. We will address critical challenges, the balance between indigenous and foreign collaboration, stakeholder roles, and grassroots development,” Onwuegbuchi said.

Onwuegbuchi emphasized that the Federal Government’s current programmes and partnerships underscore the immediate need for an ecosystem that breeds innovation, with the ultimate goal of placing Nigeria at the forefront of next-generation development.

“It is a known fact that digital and scientific innovations are crucial, not only to the survivability of a nation, but also to the sustainability of its growth. These innovations directly impact our economic strength, global image, defense, public health, and digital footprint,” he added.

The federal government is actively driving scientific innovation to foster economic diversification and build a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Current efforts are heavily focused on commercializing local research, establishing massive research funds, and building strategic infrastructure in technology, biotechnology, and healthcare.

Also speaking on the event’s significance, NITRA General Secretary Chidiebere Nwankwo noted that the forum will serve as a vital pipeline for public awareness.

“The forum will be a vehicle to propagate the views of decision-makers to the public, furthering the cause of information dissemination. The ultimate focus will be on how Nigeria can actively sustain digital innovative growth and scientific development,” Nwankwo said.
