The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has issued a stark warning about the dire state of the telecom sector, urging for an immediate review of tariffs to ensure its survival.
In an address delivered at the End-of-Year Dinner with Industry Stakeholders, ALTON Chairman Engr. Gbenga Adebayo painted a grim picture of the sector facing a “siege” from rising costs, including energy, inflation, and foreign exchange volatility.
Despite these mounting challenges, tariffs have remained stagnant, leaving operators struggling to maintain and expand their networks. Adebayo warned of potential consequences if the situation is not addressed, including service shedding, significant economic fallout for businesses, and disruptions to critical sectors like security, commerce, and healthcare.
“If nothing is done, we might begin to see in the new year grim consequences unfolding, such as Service Shedding; Operators may not be able to provide services in some areas and at some times of the day leaving millions disconnected,” Adebayo stated.
ALTON emphasized the need for decisive action to ensure the industry’s long-term sustainability. “The time for action is now. Let us not wait until it is too late,” Adebayo urged. He reiterated ALTON’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to secure the future of the telecom sector.
This call for a tariff review comes amidst growing concerns about the financial viability of telecom operators in Nigeria. The sector has played a crucial role in the country’s economic and social development, and its continued growth is considered essential for further progress.
