Not long ago, telling someone you wanted to make a living from posting videos online could sound more like a hobby than a career. Today, that distinction is becoming harder to make.
Nigeria’s growing digital audience has created an economy around content. People watch, follow, buy, send virtual gifts, discover brands and spend hours inside communities built by individual creators. Where there is an audience, an industry eventually follows.
Nigeria is beginning to recognise this. The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy has identified digital content alongside film, music, fashion and design as part of the country’s wider creative economy, with a target of creating two million creative economy jobs by 2030.
But the real significance of content creation goes beyond the people appearing on screen. One creator can create work for many others.
As an audience grows, so does the need for editors, photographers, graphic designers, social media managers, talent managers, stylists, videographers and people who handle brand partnerships and collaborations. The creator may be the face of the business, but increasingly, there is an entire operation behind the face.
Livestreaming has pushed this even further.
That is the world Simisola Johnson, popularly known online as Big Simi Stallion, one of Nigerians top livestreamers has built her career in.
With more than 500k followers across her social media platform, Johnson has built an audience around TikTok live, entertainment, fashion and creator collaborations. She has appeared alongside creators including Matta, Carter Efe, Momma Dessy and Big Salo, as well as creators from outside Nigeria. Her livestream attracts thousands of views, while her philanthropic giveaways have also become part of her online identity.
Her career shows that streaming requires more than simply turning on a camera. It requires personality, consistency, audience awareness and the ability to keep people coming back. In that sense, a livestreamer is not only producing content; they are building a community.
Big Simi Stallion (Simisola Johnson) is one example of that transition. What audiences see is a creator going live, entertaining, collaborating and connecting with people through a screen. Behind that screen is a new form of work and an industry creating opportunities for people who know how to turn attention in something valuable.
