Why Product Judgment Still Matters in the Age of AI – Chinonso Anyanwu

For Chinonso Emmanuel Anyanwu, product management is not about building features for the sake of activity. It is about understanding problems, making informed decisions, and creating products that deliver value for both customers and businesses.

His career sits at the intersection of technology, business, and product leadership. With experience spanning business analysis, software quality assurance, solution architecture, and product management, he develops a broad understanding of how products are conceived, built, and improved. That journey shapes the way he approaches leadership today, giving him a perspective that combines technical understanding with business thinking and customer insight.

A defining period of his career is his work at Maplerad, where he helps lead product strategy, delivery, and innovation across a range of initiatives. Working closely with engineering, design, and business teams, he focuses on ensuring that products remain aligned with customer needs while supporting the company’s long-term goals.

As products grow and customer bases expand, Anyanwu increasingly finds himself facing a challenge familiar to many product leaders: making sense of large volumes of customer feedback while maintaining speed and quality in decision-making.

This challenge leads him to explore AI-driven approaches to product discovery and customer feedback analysis.

Reflecting on that shift, he said, “What prompted the shift was the need to work faster and make sense of a growing amount of customer feedback without losing quality. As products scale, feedback comes from too many places, and it becomes harder to spot the real patterns quickly.”

The introduction of AI helps his team process information more efficiently, but it also reinforces an important lesson about the role of technology in product management.

“AI helped us analyse information more efficiently, but the biggest lesson was that it works best as a support tool, not a replacement for product judgment. It can speed up discovery, but human thinking is still what turns insight into a good product decision.”

That belief remains central to his philosophy. While AI continues to reshape industries and workflows, he views technology as an enabler rather than a substitute for critical thinking. For him, tools can accelerate processes, but judgment remains the foundation of effective product leadership.

As AI becomes a larger part of conversations across the fintech sector, Anyanwu approaches new opportunities with a clear framework. Rather than focusing solely on efficiency gains, he pays close attention to customer trust, compliance requirements, and operational responsibility.

“I approached AI opportunities the same way I approach any product decision in fintech by balancing value with risk. If an AI use case improves efficiency or customer experience, that is interesting, but it still has to meet the standards of trust, compliance, and explainability.”

For him, innovation and responsibility are not competing priorities. They must work together.

“I always ask whether the use case protects the customer, fits the regulatory environment, and can be supported responsibly at scale. In fintech, good product leadership means moving forward without compromising confidence.”

This focus on trust influences far more than AI-related decisions. It shapes the way he thinks about product strategy, customer relationships, and long-term growth.

Over time, his approach to product management continues to evolve. Earlier in his career, much of his attention centres on execution and delivery. As his responsibilities expand, his thinking shifts towards broader strategic questions.

“My approach has become more focused and more strategic over time. Earlier on, I was naturally closer to execution and delivery, making sure product work moved quickly and solved immediate problems.”

Today, he spends more time thinking about product positioning, sequencing, and the long-term impact of decisions.

“The biggest shift has been moving from simply building features to shaping product direction in a way that supports sustainable growth.”

Like many leaders, Anyanwu understands that product decisions rarely come with complete information. Uncertainty is often part of the process. What matters is the ability to make sound decisions based on available evidence and remain willing to learn along the way.

“One decision that stands out is choosing the path that best balanced speed, customer value, and operational safety even when all the information was not available.”

He continues: “In product leadership, you rarely get perfect clarity, so the key is to make the best decision possible with the evidence you have, then keep learning.”

For him, effective leadership is not about waiting for certainty. It is about applying judgment, weighing trade-offs, and maintaining focus on outcomes that matter.

Alongside product strategy and delivery, he also places considerable value on people and team development. Throughout his career, he mentors colleagues, supports learning, and contributes to building environments where teams can perform effectively.

Those experiences reinforce another belief that continues to guide his work: technology may change, but the foundations of product success remain remarkably consistent.

“The lesson that stays constant is that great products are built on a clear understanding of people.”

It is a simple idea, yet one that becomes increasingly important as new technologies emerge.

“Technology will keep changing, AI will keep evolving, and tools will continue to improve, but customers will always value products that are useful, simple, and trustworthy.”

For Anyanwu, understanding people remains at the heart of every product decision. New technologies will continue to transform industries. Customer expectations will evolve. Markets will shift.

Yet the responsibility to understand users, earn trust, and make thoughtful decisions remains unchanged.

He believes the same principle applies to teams.

“The other constant is that strong teams matter just as much as strong ideas. No matter how advanced the technology becomes, product success still depends on good judgment, collaboration, and disciplined execution.”
