The Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union ( ITU), Houlen Zhao was yesterday received by the Nigerian Communications Commission, where he reassures the Union’s commitment in ensuring that ICT is employed to drive the establishment of SMEs for employment.

He commends the commission’s regulatory excellence and operational efficiency despite industry challenges,  the achievement of Digital Bridge Institutes established by NCC to bridge the digital divide gap and provide vocational ICT trainings in the country.

While describing the institute as the best ICT Institute in Africa, Zhao assures the Commission that the Union will continue to work hand in hand with Telecoms regulatory bodies in Africa to ensure that the African continent reaps all the dividends of Telecoms and ICT.

Meanwhile, following Zhao’s visit, the Nigerian Communications Commission hosted the 2nd African Preparatory Meeting (APM) towards the 2018 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-18) today at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

The purpose of the African Preparatory Meeting (APM) is to harmonize Africa’s position on the Plenipotentiary process (PP-18) Agenda items ahead of the 2018 Plenipotentiary Conference.

The programme was well attended by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), some Ministries and parastatals of the Ministry of Communications Technology as well as representatives of Network Operators in Nigeria and other representatives of African Telecommunications Union (ATU) member states.
