MTN Nigeria has paid tribute to its founding Chairman, Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, following his passing, highlighting five landmark contributions that shaped the company and the broader Nigerian telecommunications landscape.

Dr. Dozie, fondly known as PGD, served as Chairman of MTN Nigeria from 2001 to 2019, playing a pivotal role in the emergence of mobile telephony in Nigeria. The company, in a statement, expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to his family and friends, recognizing him as a “pioneer, statesman, and titan of industry.”

“His unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential and his dedication to its development were truly inspiring,” said Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria. “His leadership at MTN Nigeria laid the foundation for our success, and his legacy will continue to guide us in the years to come.”

MTN highlighted five key contributions of Dr. Dozie:

    1. The Incorporation of the MTN Nigeria Foundation (2004): Dr. Dozie championed the establishment of the foundation, solidifying MTN’s commitment to social investments by dedicating a percentage of its profit after tax to community development.
    2. Launch of Africa’s Largest Switching Centre (2010): His leadership facilitated the launch of a state-of-the-art switching centre, a significant infrastructural milestone for the company and the continent.
    3. Resolution of the Regulatory Fine (2015): Dr. Dozie played a crucial role in navigating and resolving critical conversations surrounding a substantial regulatory fine, ensuring the company’s stability during a challenging period.
    4. Introduction of Africa’s First 3G Feature Phone (2018): He supported the introduction of innovative technology, bringing 3G connectivity to a wider audience through affordable devices.
    5. MTN Nigeria’s Listing on the Nigerian Exchange (2019): Dr. Dozie was instrumental in guiding MTN Nigeria’s successful listing on the premium board of the Nigerian Exchange, marking a significant step in the company’s growth and contributing to the Nigerian capital market.

Ralph Mupita, President & CEO of MTN Group, also acknowledged Dr. Dozie’s “visionary leadership that has left an indelible mark on our company’s history.”

Beyond MTN, Dr. Dozie’s impact extended across various sectors, including banking, education, and public service. He founded Diamond Bank, led the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and served as a Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

MTN described him as a “quiet revolutionary” who could ease tensions with grace and consistently led with clarity and conviction. He was honored with the national awards of Officer and Commander of the Order of the Niger (OON and CON).

“His memory will remain a guiding light for MTN, Nigeria’s business community, and everyone who shares his unwavering commitment to progress built on integrity and service,” MTN Nigeria and MTN Group stated.
