The African Development Bank (AfDB) has solidified its commitment to Africa’s infrastructure development by investing $20 million in the African Infrastructure Investment Fund 4 (AIIF4). This strategic move, approved by the Bank’s Board of Directors in June, aims to catalyze private sector participation and bridge the continent’s significant infrastructure gap.

Africa’s infrastructure sector presents a compelling investment opportunity, driven by surging urbanization and growing consumer demand. Despite the sector’s potential, it faces a chronic shortage of capital, with an estimated annual financing gap of between $68 and $108 billion.

AIIF4, targeting a $500 million fund size, has already secured over its initial goal, with a final close expected in the third quarter of 2024. The fund is poised to invest in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and ports and logistics projects across the continent, with a particular focus on South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal.

“This investment is a testament to our confidence in AIIF4’s ability to drive impactful investments and bridge the infrastructure financing gap in Africa,” said Mike Salawou, Director for Infrastructure, Cities and Urban Development at the AfDB. “By supporting the private sector, we are accelerating Africa’s development journey.”

The AfDB’s investment aligns with its ‘High 5’ development priorities and Ten-Year Strategy, which emphasize private sector growth and infrastructure development. The Bank expects the investment to contribute significantly to job creation, economic growth, and improved living standards for Africans.
