The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released a revised edition of the Radio Regulations, the global treaty governing the use of radio frequencies and satellite orbits. Effective January 1, 2025, the updated regulations aim to foster innovation, improve connectivity, and ensure equitable access to this essential resource.
The 2024 Radio Regulations, the result of a four-year process culminating in the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23), address the growing demand for spectrum and the need to accommodate new technologies. The treaty provides a framework for national spectrum management, ensuring a stable regulatory environment for innovative radiocommunication services.
Key features of the updated regulations include:
- Identification of new spectrum resources: The treaty identifies additional frequencies to support technological advancements and enhance connectivity.
- Improved space-based radio resource management: The regulations aim to increase access to and equitable use of space-based resources.
- Enhanced safety: The treaty supports safety at sea, in the air, and on land through improved radiocommunication services.
ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin emphasized the significance of the updated regulations, stating, “As technology advances and the demand for spectrum grows, the Radio Regulations continue to evolve to meet the needs of modern communication systems.”
