Nigeria is taking a major leap towards becoming a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation. The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE) announced a significant collaboration with Google.org. This partnership includes a grant of N2.8 billion to support the development of a skilled AI workforce in Nigeria.
This initiative directly addresses the need for AI expertise in Nigeria. The Google.org grant will be directed towards Data Science Nigeria, an organization working with the FMCIDE on AI talent development programs. Here’s a breakdown of these programs:
- DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme: This program aims to equip 20,000 young Nigerians with advanced skills in data science and AI, preparing them for careers in this growing field.
- Experience AI Programme: This program targets educators, providing them with the tools and resources to introduce AI to 125,000 young people. This initiative aims to inspire the next generation of AI innovators.
- Government AI Campus Programme: This program focuses on upskilling policymakers and government officials on AI policymaking. This ensures responsible development and implementation of AI policies in Nigeria.
Building a strong foundation in AI
This collaboration builds upon the groundwork laid by the FMCIDE earlier this year. The Ministry hosted the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) Workshop, followed by the release of the National AI Strategy. This strategy outlines a plan to leverage AI for economic growth, improved governance, and increased well-being for all Nigerians.
Supporting innovative startups
The announcement also highlighted the beneficiaries of the AI Fund, established by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) in partnership with Google. Each selected startup will receive N100 million in funding and up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits to scale their solutions. Additionally, these startups gain access to Google’s AI tools, mentorship, and a network of global innovators.
The 10 startups selected represent diverse sectors like healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance. By leveraging AI, these startups can address local challenges and drive sustainable economic growth.
Collaboration for a brighter future
This initiative reflects Google’s commitment to fostering innovation in Africa. Matt Brittin, President of Google for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, emphasized their support for African innovators. He highlighted the initiative’s potential to unlock the benefits of the digital economy for more Nigerians.
A recent report by Public First estimates that AI could contribute as much as $15 billion to Nigeria’s economy by 2030. By equipping Nigerians with the necessary skills and resources, this collaboration aims to unlock this potential and secure Nigeria’s position as a leader in the digital future.
This announcement builds on Google’s previous commitment of N1.2 billion made in 2023 to empower Nigerians through digital skills and economic growth programs. Together, the FMCIDE and Google are fostering a sustainable AI ecosystem that will drive innovation and positive social and economic impact across Nigeria.
