As Nigeria is rapidly emerging as a global cryptocurrency hub and moving towards a regulated digital asset market, balancing innovation with robust consumer protection, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, has outlined the government’s new approach, emphasizing the potential of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology to empower citizens and drive economic growth.

In an article he wrote this week, Idris highlighted Nigeria’s significant crypto adoption, citing international reports consistently ranking the nation among the top users worldwide. “Our population over 200 million strong, with a median age under 20 is naturally inclined toward new technologies,” Idris stated, noting that crypto has become a vital tool for freelancers, small businesses, and families receiving remittances.

He however noted that the rapid growth of the crypto market has also presented challenges, including concerns about regulation, consumer protection, and the potential for misuse. Previous restrictions on financial institutions facilitating crypto transactions led to a significant portion of the market operating underground.

According to him, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria is now adopting a more nuanced approach. “We are moving away from blanket restrictions toward thoughtful, balanced regulation that acknowledges both the risks and the transformative potential of crypto and blockchain technologies,” Idris explained.

The government’s new regulatory framework aims to foster innovation while ensuring market integrity and protecting consumers. Key objectives include expanding access to financial services for the unbanked and underbanked, facilitating efficient and low-cost international transactions, enabling Nigerian entrepreneurs and freelancers to participate in the global economy and supporting the growth of decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

“Simultaneously, the government is committed to addressing concerns about fraud, money laundering, and terrorism financing through effective regulation,” he added.

Beyond cryptocurrencies, Nigeria recognizes the potential of blockchain technology in various sectors. Idris mentioned ongoing discussions about using blockchain to improve:

    • Land Registries: Reducing fraud and strengthening property rights.
    • Identity Management Systems: Enhancing financial inclusion.
    • Supply Chain Monitoring: Improving food security and public procurement.

Nigeria is actively seeking collaboration with international partners, regulators, and crypto industry stakeholders to develop a transparent and predictable regulatory environment. “We aim to create a transparent and predictable environment where businesses can thrive while ensuring Nigerian citizens are protected from undue risks,” Idris said.

The Minister concluded by reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to responsible crypto adoption, inviting the global crypto community to engage with the government in shaping the future of digital assets in the country.
