Digital Realty has received three prestigious awards at the 20th Anniversary Excellence and Legacy Awards of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), in recognition of its contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure and local interconnection ecosystem.
The company, which operates Medallion Data Centre, was the only organisation to receive three awards at the ceremony held last Friday, underscoring its longstanding relationship with IXPN and its role in developing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
The awards included the Strategic Data Centre Partnership Award and the IXPN Founding Members Legacy Award, both presented to Digital Realty, while its Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, received the Distinguished Contribution to Internet Exchange Development Award.
The recognitions acknowledged Digital Realty’s investment in data centre infrastructure, its pioneering role as a founding member of IXPN, and its sustained support for local internet traffic exchange and the development of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
The Digital Datacenter in Lagos (LOS1/LOS2) remains the main hub of Internet Exchange for Nigeria with a majority of the internet exchange traffic routed and connected at the campus.
Speaking at the event, IXPN Chief Executive Officer, Muhammed Rudman, highlighted the significant expansion of interconnection capacity among Nigeria’s major data centre facilities, noting that as the hub for local internet traffic exchange, connectivity between Equinix and Medallion had reached 1 terabit per second (Tbps), while the link between Rack Centre and Medallion had expanded to 500 gigabits per second (Gbps).
The expansion reflects the growing capacity of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure to support increasing data traffic, improve network resilience and facilitate the delivery of digital services.
While appreciating the awards accorded to Digital Realty, Engr. Nnamani stressed that its’ datacenters continues to serve as the central location for local internet peering in Nigeria, hosting significant majority of IXPN traffic as it is the hub connecting other datacenters in a star configuration.
His comments highlighted Medallion/Digital Realty continuing importance in keeping local internet traffic within Nigeria, reducing dependence on international transit routes and supporting more efficient connectivity among internet service providers, telecommunications operators and content providers.
The three awards also reflect the longstanding relationship between Digital Realty and IXPN, which has played a major role in improving local internet interconnection since its establishment in 2006.
Over the past two decades, IXPN has worked to strengthen Nigeria’s internet ecosystem by enabling networks to exchange traffic locally, helping to reduce latency, lower connectivity costs and improve the overall performance of internet services.
As a founding member and infrastructure host, Digital Realty has provided a platform for local peering and interconnection, supporting the growth of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure and the wider digital economy.
Digital Realty reaffirmed its commitment to providing resilient, carrier-neutral data centre infrastructure to support the next phase of internet growth in Nigeria and across West Africa.
The recognition comes as demand for reliable data centre facilities and high-capacity interconnection continues to rise, driven by the expansion of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital financial services, content delivery and other data-intensive technologies.
