Dr. Krishnan Ranganath, Regional Executive for West Africa at Africa Data Centres has emphasized the importance of collaboration among industry stakeholders to drive data center adoption in Africa.
Speaking during a panel session on ‘Data Center and Cloud Address: Africa’s Journey to 2500MW’ at the Hyperscalers Convergence Africa conference, Krishnan stressed that a unified approach is crucial to overcome the challenges hindering the growth of the data center sector in Africa.
“If we don’t collaborate, we won’t succeed. We need to put aside our egos and work together to address the common challenges facing the data center industry in Africa,” Dr. Krish as he fondly called in the industry stated.
He highlighted these key areas where collaboration is essential:
- Power infrastructure: The availability and reliability of power are critical for the operation of data centers. Ranganath suggested exploring partnerships with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to address power shortages and ensure a stable supply of electricity.
- Network infrastructure: A robust and reliable network infrastructure is essential for connecting data centers to the Internet and other networks. Ranganath called for investments in network upgrades to improve connectivity and reduce latency.
- Regulatory environment: The regulatory framework governing the data center industry must be supportive and conducive to investment. Ranganath urged governments to create policies that encourage the development of data centers and foster a competitive environment.
While cautioning against short-term approaches and urging industry players to invest in infrastructure and technology that will support the region’s digital transformation, he emphasized that a long-term vision for the data center industry in Africa is the way to go.
