Crypto Bootcamp Community documents the continent’s first multi-city, multi-country Bitcoin circular economy activation, charting growth from 18 cities to a self-sustaining global movement.
Crypto Bootcamp Community, Africa’s largest grassroots blockchain and cryptocurrency education network, has officially released its Bitcoin Pizza Day Impact Report 2022–2026.
The report provides the first comprehensive, data-supported account of organized Bitcoin Pizza Day celebrations in Africa, documenting four years of community-led Bitcoin adoption infrastructure across the continent.
Through verified event records, community archives, and independent media documentation, the report establishes a historic milestone: Crypto Bootcamp’s Bitcoin Pizza Day Hangout, first organized on May 22, 2022, across 18 cities in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda was the first formally organized, multi-city, multi-country Bitcoin community celebration in Africa’s history. No prior organized Bitcoin Pizza Day event by any community on the African continent has been identified in publicly available records.
Over four consecutive annual editions between 2022 and 2025, the programme grew exponentially. Geographic expansion saw the initiative scale from 18 cities across four countries to over 40 cities across 16 countries, extending beyond Africa to the United Arab Emirates and the United States. In terms of overall footprint, total cumulative participation exceeded 50,000 attendees across more than 94 organized events.
The 2022 debut was confirmed as Africa’s first organized Bitcoin Pizza Day event, drawing in over 5,000 simultaneous participants across 18 cities and four countries.
The event has shown a strong four-year growth trajectory, expanding from 18 cities and 4 countries in 2022 to 35 cities and 9 countries in 2023. This expansion continued into 2024 with coverage across 21 cities and 11 countries, followed by 20 cities and 13 countries in 2025.
Furthermore, the initiative established a circular economy baseline, earning the designation as Africa’s first informal, large-scale Bitcoin circular economy activation at a grassroots community scale.
These founder-funded foundations were largely made possible by founder Obinna Iwuno, who personally financed an estimated 60% of total programme costs, which included liquidating his personal Bitcoin holdings to fund the inaugural 2022 edition and subsequent iterations.
The initiative has also built a robust leadership pipeline, successfully incubating a top-tier cohort of African Bitcoin community leaders from its alumni network, including Brindon Mwiine of Gorilla Sats and Bitcoin Kampala in Uganda, and Kester Ejikeme of Bitcoin Pidgin and Bitcoin Anambra in Nigeria.
Consequently, the event has gained widespread global and local recognition, featuring prominent media coverage across multiple editions from Bloomberg Intelligence, the Bitcoin Magazine print edition, TechCabal, ITPulse, TechEconomy.ng, Washington Morning, TechNext24, and TechBuild.africa.
Finally, the movement has achieved a full transition to self-sustenance. Independent communities across Africa, the Middle East, and North America now autonomously organize annual Bitcoin Pizza Day events without direct coordination from the Crypto Bootcamp Community.
Background: Bitcoin Pizza Day and the African Context
Bitcoin Pizza Day commemorates May 22, 2010, the date of the first known real-world Bitcoin transaction. On this day, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz exchanged 10,000 Bitcoins for two pizzas, establishing the first empirical proof of Bitcoin as a practical medium of exchange. While observed globally since 2014, the celebration lacked a structured footprint in Africa until 2022.
This infrastructure gap existed despite the massive scale and urgency of African crypto adoption. Nigeria ranked first globally for peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange trade volume according to the Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index (2021, 2023), against a backdrop where an estimated 57% of sub-Saharan African adults remain unbanked (World Bank Global Findex, 2021).
Founded in Nigeria in 2020 by Obinna Iwuno, Crypto Bootcamp Community filled this void. Growing from an initial WhatsApp group of 16 members to over 10,000 members across multiple African nations by 2022, CBC’s core mandate remains the democratization of blockchain and crypto education through utility-first, inclusion-grounded engagement.
