    As a reputable product designer, Precious Nnamani understands the organizational importance of a smooth handover process in design projects to other product designers and development teams, as evidenced in the success of her work across Nigeria and the U.S.

    In any team, a well-designed and planned handover ensures that the development team has a clear understanding of the design requirements, resulting in a smooth implementation process.

    In this article, we explore the process involve in handing over design projects like a Pro, as directed by Precious Nnamani, design lead at TapIn Platforms. We focus on the key steps involved, including conducting a comprehensive review session, obtaining final sign-off from the product team, preparing implementation documentation, ensuring relevant compliance, documenting acceptance criteria, creating dev tickets, and maintaining ongoing collaboration and quality assurance.

    A hassle-free handover process starts with an unavoidable comprehensive review session alongside the project team. This meeting ensures that all the members are familiar and understand project details which include design requirements, user flow, and interaction guidelines. The final sign-off from the product team is critical in ensuring that the requirements and expectations are achieved. This approval indicates that the design meets the product’s vision and goals.

    Implementation documentation is critical in ensuring that the development team has a thorough understanding of the design. This includes documenting every flow, action, screen detail, gesture, and interaction. The documentation should be comprehensive, accessible, and easy to understand. Ensuring accessibility compliance is also vital, and this involves reviewing accessibility guidelines and standards to ensure that all requirements are met. Among those requirements are the following;

    1. Flows: Detailed descriptions of the user’s trajectory, including each step and decision points.
    1. Actions: Clear explanations of what happens when a user interacts with the product, including button clicks, scrolling, and other gestures.
    1. Screen details: Accurate descriptions of each screen, including layout, content, and visual design elements.
    1. Gestures: Definitions of how users interact with the product using gestures and hand movements such as swiping, tapping, and pinching.
    1. Interactions: Details of how the product responds to user input, such as animations, transitions, and feedback.

    Documentation of the acceptance criteria is equally essential in stating the conditions required for product acceptance. This ensures that clear and concise acceptance criteria are created in the bid to avoid misunderstandings and mishaps during the implementation process. Creating dev tickets utilising platforms like Jira ensures that all salient information is provided to the devs team. Supplementary resources, such as Loom videos and access to Dropbox folders with assets and Figma files, ensure visual guidance and arming the development team with the requirements needed to proceed.

    Finally, continuous collaboration and QA sessions are imperative in ensuring constant communication and feedback loops. Conducting weekly stand-ups with the development team ensures that any issues or concerns are addressed promptly. This collaboration promotes clarity and ensures a smooth implementation process. The activities during these sessions include, but are not limited to:

    • Identifying and addressing potential issues early on
    • Clarifying any doubts or concerns
    • Ensuring everyone is aligned
    • Making necessary adjustments
    • Keeping the project on track

    In conclusion, Precious emphasizes that a thorough handover process is crucial for ensuring a smooth project transition. By following these steps, designers can collaborate effectively with the development team, providing a clear understanding of the design requirements and facilitating a seamless implementation process. Precious strongly encourages all designers to adopt these practices, as they foster collaboration and clarity in design handovers. She said, “By doing so, we can ensure our designs are implemented effectively and to everyone’s satisfaction”.
