Stakeholders from Nigeria’s transportation sector and law enforcement agencies are calling for a collaborative approach, increased safety education, and standardized regulations to tackle the security challenges posed by ride-hailing services. This consensus emerged from the inDrive Safety Education Summit 2.0, held on Friday, June 20, 2025.
Timothy Oladimeji, Country Representative for inDrive Nigeria, stated in his welcome address that the summit aimed to generate insights that would help inDrive collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure the safety of both drivers and riders. The summit also sought to bridge the education gap among users regarding inDrive’s safety features. Oladimeji emphasized that safety is a collective responsibility, highlighting inDrive’s significant investment in technology to enhance its safety features, ensuring user safety even before a trip begins.
Delivering the keynote address, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, represented by Engr. Adebayo Olusoji, Director of Public Transport and Commuter Services (PTCS), commended inDrive for convening the gathering. Osiyemi described it as a testament to stakeholders’ collective commitment to creating safer environments for citizens.
During a panel session titled “Strengthening Driver & Passenger Trust,” Osiyemi underscored the imperative of strengthening collaborations and addressing challenges to achieve safer urban mobility. He highlighted several steps crucial for enhancing urban mobility safety, including prioritizing interagency coordination. He stressed that various government bodies, transport authorities, law enforcement, and private sector players must collaborate to create streamlined communication channels and foster a spirit of cooperation.
“We have seen the impact that enhanced coordination can have in mitigating crises and ensuring quick and effective responses to emergencies,” Osiyemi stated. “Whether it’s through shared data systems, joint training exercises, or collaborative policy-making, the benefits of interagency coordination are vast. It is time we leverage our collective knowledge and resources to create a harmonized approach to urban mobility.”
He further emphasized the necessity of standardizing safety regulations across the board to ensure all operators and transport systems adhere to the same high safety standards, regardless of location or mode of transport. Osiyemi also noted the need for regulations to be adaptive, incorporating modern advancements like smart mobility solutions and emerging safety technologies to foster a proactive approach to improving urban mobility and safety. Inclusive stakeholder engagement in policymaking was also identified as vital, as insights from transportation stakeholders are instrumental in crafting effective and empathetic policies.
Superintendent Route Commander, Federal Road Safety Corp, Lagos Command, Ayodele Ologun, shared the agency’s efforts in ensuring the safety of passengers, riders, and drivers. He highlighted the Lagos command’s responsiveness in reporting incidents and crashes, providing post-crash inspections, and offering post-crash monitoring as needed. Ologun also mentioned the introduction of the FRSC app, allowing individuals to report accidents or determine vehicle speeds.
Similarly, Benjamin Hundeyin, Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Police Force, Lagos Command, represented by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos Command, Adedayo Abu Sadiq, affirmed the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety of every Nigerian. Abu Sadiq stated that the Force is highly responsive in protecting citizens, particularly in emergencies, and will continue to collaborate with ride-hailing platforms, transport stakeholders, and other law enforcement agencies to ensure citizen safety.
Maryanne Momoh-Ige, Country Public Policy & Government Affairs Manager for inDrive Nigeria, stressed the importance of government formulating public policy that protects ethical disclosure of data. She noted that such a framework is crucial for protecting passengers, companies, and their fundamental rights to data privacy.
The summit also featured a fireside chat titled “Innovation in App-Based Mobility Safety,” which included Folake Owoduni, winner of the 2023 Aurora Tech award.
