In a significant move set to revolutionize internet access for students, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Tijani Bosun, officially launched the Fibre-to-Hostel initiative at the University of Lagos.

This targeted intervention aims to provide high-speed fiber-optic internet directly to student residences, marking a new era of connectivity for higher education in Nigeria.

The initiative, unveiled by Dr. Bosun, is designed to place robust connectivity at the heart of learning environments. “We are creating the foundation for innovation, collaboration, and global competitiveness among Nigeria’s youth,” stated Dr. Bosun, emphasizing the transformative potential of this project.

The University of Lagos is among the first seven universities selected for this pilot phase, with ambitious plans for expansion to more institutions across the country.

Beyond enhancing student learning, the Minister also took the opportunity to officially launch the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) Impact Alliance. This strategic platform is set to foster collaboration between public and private sector partners, driving connectivity initiatives that aim to leave no community behind, particularly within the education sector.

Dr. Bosun underscored its importance, asserting that it is a critical step in ensuring that access to the internet becomes a universal right, not a privilege.

Concluding his day in Lagos, Dr. Bosun further introduced the Ministry’s Talent Cities Initiative at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) Campus in Oshodi. This program seeks to repurpose underutilized public infrastructure into world-class digital campuses, serving as vibrant hubs for skill acquisition, innovation, and job creation. The ultimate goal, according to the Minister, is to ensure that “every talented Nigerian, regardless of location, can access the opportunities that exist in the digital economy.”

These initiatives, Dr. Bosun explained, reflect the Ministry’s integrated approach to digital transformation, one that prioritizes connecting people, empowering institutions, and preparing Nigeria’s workforce for the future. The Ministry remains steadfast in its focus on building the necessary infrastructure, ecosystems, and partnerships to propel Nigeria to the forefront as a digital leader on the global stage.
