    The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to extend its 622 Toll-Free complaints channel to accommodate more local languages in Nigeria in what could be seen as an acknowledgment of the country’s diversity in languages.

    The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta dropped the hint at the National Assembly, Abuja when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Communications for screening for reappointment for the second term of five years in office.

    “We have plans to introduce more dialects to the 622 Toll-Free channel, which was introduced to address some of the complaints of telecom consumers in Nigeria. The idea is to have more Nigerians on board the initiative,” he announced.

    Meanwhile, the former University lecturer also disclosed that over 20million Nigerians have activated the 2442 DND Code to manage the challenges with unsolicited text messages, assuring that consumer protection is the top priority of the telecom regulatory body.

    The NCC’s 622 Toll-Free channel is designed to give opportunities to consumers of telecommunication services who are dissatisfied with services rendered to them by any of the Service Providers have a right to seek redress.

    A dissatisfied consumer should first contact the Service Provider whose service or product he/she is dissatisfied with to lodge a complaint. The Service Provider issues a ticket number to the consumer upon lodging a complaint.

    In the event that the complaint is not satisfactorily resolved by the Service Provider, the Consumer can escalate the complaint to the Commission via any of the following channels;

    (1) Write a letter of complaint to the Commission.

    (2) Call the NCC 622 toll-free line.

    (3) Fill the complaint form

    It is one of the various consumer initiatives the Commission has put in place to protect telecom consumers from being short-changed by their service providers.
