In a significant move to propel the nation into the forefront of the global digital economy, the Federal Government has announced the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence (NACE) at the University of Jos (UniJos).

The announcement was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during the 50th Convocation Ceremony of the university. He said the center is designed to serve as a hub for cutting-edge research, talent development, and technological breakthroughs.

The launch of the NACE marks a strategic investment in Nigeria’s intellectual infrastructure. According to Dr. Tijani, the choice of the University of Jos as the host for this center underscores the government’s commitment to decentralizing innovation and leveraging the academic strengths of regional institutions.

“The centre will support our efforts in strengthening research, skills, and innovation and positioning Nigeria as a serious contributor to the global AI ecosystem,” the Minister stated.

By focusing on local research, the center aims to address uniquely Nigerian challenges, ranging from agriculture and healthcare to financial inclusion using AI-driven solutions developed by homegrown talent.

Beyond local development, the initiative is a statement of intent on the international stage. As Artificial Intelligence continues to redefine industries worldwide, Nigeria is seeking to move from being a mere consumer of technology to an active architect of its future.

Dr. Tijani emphasized that the country cannot afford to be a bystander in the ongoing technological revolution.

“AI will shape the future of every economy and Nigeria intends to shape how it is built,” he added, highlighting the government’s vision of digital sovereignty and leadership.

The National AI Centre of Excellence is expected to:

    • Bridge the gap between academia, the private sector, and government policy.
    • Provide students and researchers with access to high-level computing resources and mentorship.
    • Create a fertile ground for startups and international tech partnerships.

The establishment of this center at UniJos is seen as a cornerstone of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, aiming to ensure that Nigeria’s youth are equipped with the skills necessary for the jobs of tomorrow.
