In a major push to modernize Nigeria’s public service, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has successfully transitioned the Federal Character Commission (FCC) from traditional manual workflows to a sophisticated, data-driven oversight model.
The intervention is a key component of the Digital Literacy for All (DL4All) initiative, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda to reform the economy and improve governance through effective service delivery.
The program, held at the FCC headquarters, combined intensive technical training with a direct hardware intervention. NITDA donated 35 high-end laptops to the Commission, ensuring that the staff can immediately apply their new skills to their daily operations.
Representing NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa, Dr. Ahmed Yusuf Tambour, the Acting Director of Digital Literacy and Capacity Building, emphasized that the training was “deliberately tailored” to the Commission’s unique statutory role.
The FCC is responsible for ensuring equitable representation across all Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). To achieve this transparently, the Commission requires robust data handling capabilities.
The specialized curriculum focused on:
- Data Analysis: Turning raw personnel statistics from across Nigeria into actionable insights.
- Data Management: Ensuring the integrity, security, and accessibility of nationwide datasets.
- Digital Proficiency: Moving beyond basic literacy to advanced institutional performance tools.
By equipping 35 key staff members with both the technical know-how and the physical tools, NITDA aims to eliminate the bottlenecks associated with manual record-keeping.
“We are hoping that this will help the Commission to manage the very, very important data that they collect across all MDAs,” Inuwa stated, noting that the program was highly impactful and well-received by the participants.
This move marks a significant step toward a Modern Public Service, where data-driven decision-making replaces guesswork, ensuring that every part of the Nigerian federation is fairly represented in the national workforce.
