Nigerian equities recalibrate as All-Share Index holds 200,000-point mark

The Nigerian equities market entered a phase of careful recalibration last week, as capital market operators prioritized valuation discipline over broad-based optimism, Proshare Newsletter has revealed.

Despite the cautious sentiment, the benchmark All-Share Index (ASI) maintained its resilience, closing the week firmly above the psychologically significant 200,000-point threshold, finishing Tuesday’s session at 201,996.03 points.

Analysts remain divided on key tickers, particularly within the banking sector. Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) has become a focal point of debate, attracting split recommendations from brokers as the market grapples with determining its fair value at current price levels. In contrast, sentiment toward Zenith Bank and Stanbic IBTC remains bullish, with “Buy” ratings supported by strong earnings visibility and consistent dividend momentum.

The industrial goods sector is also witnessing a constructive shift. Both WAPCO (Lafarge Africa) and Dangote Cement (DANGCEM) are seeing upward price projections, fueled by expectations of sustained demand in the construction and infrastructure space.

While consumer goods show early signs of stabilizing, analysts warn that downside risks have not been fully accounted for in current valuations. Meanwhile, the insurance and oil and gas sectors saw minimal movement in analyst sentiment over the past week.

As the market moves further into the second quarter, institutional investors are pivoting toward fundamental triggers.

“As FY 2025 earnings disclosures progress, dividend declarations and recapitalization outcomes will serve as the principal reference points for institutional positioning in the week ahead,” according to Proshare.

With year-to-date gains currently hovering near 29.77%, investors are expected to keep a close watch on the upcoming banking recapitalization milestones and corporate dividend yields to guide their next moves in a market increasingly defined by selectivity.
