Stop thieves in their tracks: Enhanced security features for android users worldwide

Protecting Your Phone, Your Data, and Your Peace of Mind

Imagine this: You’re stuck in traffic, minding your own business, when a thief snatches your phone. Not only are cherished memories like photos lost, but your personal and financial information is now at risk.

This scenario, unfortunately, is all too common. Phone theft is a growing concern, especially in Africa, where smartphone usage is booming. But worry no more! Android is stepping up its game with a suite of advanced theft protection features designed to safeguard your device and data.

Available Now: Powerful Features to Deter Theft

    • Android 15 and a Google Play Services update (Android 10+ devices) bring these features to users worldwide.
    • Theft Detection Lock: This AI-powered guardian angel proactively detects potential snatch attempts. Using on-device machine learning, it analyzes signals and locks the screen if theft seems imminent. (Gradually rolling out for compatibility, check your settings for availability.)
    • Offline Device Lock: Worried about a thief taking your phone offline to bypass Find My Device? This feature automatically locks the screen if your unlocked device goes offline for a prolonged period.

Even if Your Phone Goes Missing:

    • Remote Lock: Lost your phone? No problem. Even without your Google account credentials, you can remotely lock it with just a verified phone number at Android.com/lock. This buys you time to locate or wipe your device via Find My Device. (Remember, regular backups are crucial!)

Advanced Security Features in Android 15:

    • Enhanced Security Settings: Accessing sensitive features like Find My Device now requires your PIN, password, or biometric authentication, making unauthorized access tougher.
    • Multiple Login Attempts = Lockout: Repeated failed login attempts, a telltale sign of a thief, will now automatically lock your device.
    • Factory Reset Protection on Steroids: Resetting your device for resale becomes a nightmare for thieves with enhanced factory reset protection. Your Google account credentials are now mandatory, significantly reducing its resale value and protecting your data.

Coming Soon: Identity Check for an Extra Layer of Protection

This opt-in feature will require biometric authentication when accessing critical settings like PIN changes, disabling theft protection, or accessing Passkeys from a suspicious location. This added security ensures your data remains safe even if your PIN is compromised.

    Real-World Protection for Everyone

By integrating AI and biometrics, Android is making your device a less attractive target for thieves. These features are just the beginning of our commitment to providing real-world protection for everyone. We’re dedicated to working with partners worldwide to continuously improve Android security, keeping you and your data safe.
